Self-fixated microendoscopic discectomy in the treatment of lumbar disc hermiation

[Abstract] Objective To apply self-fixated microendoscopic discectomy (MED) for the treatment of lumbar disc herniation. Methods 44 cases of lumbar disc herniation have been operated with self-fixated MED since Ocotober,2000.There were 28 male cases and 16 female ones. Among them, the average age were 39.6 years old (range ,22-71 ) ,with a mean history of 16.4 months(range,4 months-8 years). Results All the cases were followed up for 3-10 months with the results of excellent in 31 cases , good in 7 cases , fair in 6 cases. The rate of excellent and good was 86.4%. There were three cases of cerebral-spinal fluid leakage as a result of dural avulsion and one case of cauda equina injury with local numbness of the involved extremity. All these cases happened exclusively at the earliest time,and as we became experienced, there had no occurrence. There was no infectious discitis. Conclusion The advantages of self-fixated MED were minimal invasion, easily manipulation and rapidly recovery. It can be used for the treatment of choice of single-sided,single- level lumbar disc herniation,with or without spinal canal stenosis.
